They Are Only Small Once Teach Them Safety for a Lifetime

David A. Ward Sr.

Some of the most important safety lessons begin with a simple invitation: “Come sit with me. Let’s color.”

A child chooses a crayon. A parent asks a question. A grandparent shares a story. A teacher connects a picture to something children experience every day. An ordinary moment becomes an opportunity to learn—and a memory to carry forward.

That is why I created Coloring Your Way to Safety at Home, School, and Play: to bring children and the adults who care for them together around conversations that matter.

This multicultural coloring book invites families and educators to make safety part of their time together. With editions in English and Spanish, more families can share those conversations in the language they use at home.

Give the conversation room to grow

As you color together, ask: What do you notice in this picture? What could someone do to stay safe? Whom could you ask for help? How could we use this lesson at home, at school, or while playing?

Listen to the answers. Give children time to ask their own questions. Connect the pictures to familiar places and practice the lessons together. Their questions may show you what they understand and what still needs your attention.

Parents and grandparents can make it a shared family activity. Teachers and caregivers can use it to begin a discussion. Organizations can extend their commitment to safety by sharing the book with employees and their families.

After more than four decades in safety, I know how deeply one injury can affect an entire family. I want safety conversations to begin early, with patience, attention, and people children trust.

Parents, enjoy your children. Teach them valuable safety lessons for home, school, and play. They are only small once. Make some precious memories while helping them learn.
